The importance of teaching children the value of kindness and charity as global citizens in a turbulent world…

There is a great deal of deprivation in our world. Sadly, this is something that our children are accustomed to; they are growing up exposed to poverty both in their city and around the world. It is therefore of the utmost importance that we do not allow them to accept this as the norm. It is vital that we do not allow our children to believe that they are powerless, and that this is happening in a world separate to theirs.

Empowering children with the mindset that ‘we can help, we can make a difference’ is therefore a priority at Childwall Valley Primary School. We do this by placing a great deal of emphasis on the values of caring, giving and kindness. It is our aim to ensure that these principles are embedded in the education that our children receive.

We will do this by focusing on two very important charities and teaching our children about the very important role of our PTA.

Firstly, it is important for the children to know that the PTA raise funds to give back to the school, with the children benefiting directly from this. This will give our children an understanding of what this means for them and how it impacts positively on their own life experiences. Understanding that others will freely give their time to make a difference for others, not only emphasises our values but is an act of selflessness, which CVP are very grateful to the PTA for.

Before our children can understand the world around them, they need to understand the community and city where they are raised. This is why our first carefully chosen charity is Cash for Kids, an appeal raising funds for children in Liverpool. Cash for Kids supports children and young people affected by poverty, abuse, neglect, life-limiting illness and those who have additional needs. They are a grant-giving charity helping community groups, other charitable organisations, schools and individual causes. This local charity will teach our children about poverty in their own locality and how they can make a difference for children in the community in which they live.

Our second charity Edukid focuses on removing the barriers to education faced by children living in poverty and conflict in Africa. With our children’s help and support we will focus on the wider world and look at how we can make a positive difference to other children’s life chances and experiences in poverty-stricken countries. We will do this by sponsoring three children. Through assemblies and lessons our aim is to educate our children about the poverty faced for children living in Uganda and empower them to demonstrate our values to make a difference. They will get to know the children they sponsor and school will be in regular contact to see how the children are progressing in their education. Our children will meet children who have come through the Edukid charity and hear about how sponsorship has given them the opportunity to fulfil their dreams. For children to have direct contact with the children they sponsor; truly understand the difference sponsorship makes and develop compassion towards the less fortunate is an essential virtue for every human being.

We firmly believe that by focusing on these specific charities aimed at supporting children, will allow our children to become fully immersed into the direct impact fundraising has on the lives of others less fortunate than themselves, giving ‘charity’ meaning and purpose.

Meeting our Sponsor Children

What an amazing experience our school council had on the 2nd February 2022, ‘Zooming’ in in to speak to our sponsor children in Uganda. This was a really exciting opportunity and something Edukid has introduced for the first time. The school council had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about Ugandan culture directly from the children we work with themselves. They were shown a Ugandan classroom and talked with some of the children from the Edukid project in Uganda. A huge thank you to Edukid for arranging this and giving our children an amazing insight into the lives of children in other parts of the world.
