PSHE ( inc RSHE)
At Childwall Valley Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), including statutory Relationships and Health Education (RSHE), is a vital part of our curriculum and school ethos. We use a planned programme of learning where the children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to keep themselves healthy and safe. PSHE/ RSHE provides the children with the building blocks in order for them to develop healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online, in addition to the importance of keeping healthy.
As part of our whole school approach, PSHE develops the qualities and attributes that children need to manage opportunities, challenges and responsibilities as they grow up, enabling them to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
We use the published scheme, 1 Decision as a base to teach our PSHE/ RHSE curriculum. However, we very much tailor our curriculum to meet the needs of our children and we supplement it by incorporating The Zones of Regulation lessons.
By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our effective PSHE/ RSHE programme enables staff to tackle barriers to learning and raise aspirations for our pupils.
Relationships and Health Education is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive manner and supports children to understand healthy relationships, personal boundaries, consent, respect and the importance of kindness and equality. Pupils learn about families and caring friendships, mental wellbeing, personal hygiene, physical health and fitness, online relationships and staying safe both online and offline. Through our RSHE curriculum, children are encouraged to develop respect for themselves and others, celebrate differences and understand the importance of making informed and responsible choices.
We recognise the important role parents and carers play in supporting children’s understanding of relationships and health. We value working in partnership with families and aim to ensure that learning is delivered in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment.
